Intro: The Dare!

The sun crested the mountain with red warmth unlike any other. I was surprised to feel the warmth through the window on my face. I stretched before getting up and heard the rustling on the other side of the room divider, reminding me of my roommate on the other side.

“Good morning, Denise,” I yawned. Wither she was a wake or not I always said good morning. Denise and I have lived in Bridgeport since we graduated Community High School in Twinbrook.

“Morning,” Denise stated in a groggy voice. “I want waffles. How about you, Scar?”

I mumbled something she must have took to be a 'yes' and she padded out of the room.

I got up and made my bed, another thing I do every morning, and headed for the dresser when I noticed Denise had not made her bed, yet. I made an about face and headed right for her bed.

“GRRR! Why is she so lazy? I am always cleaning up after her.” I said to myself as I headed to make her bed too. I quickly made her bed and changed in to my everyday outfit, and headed for the kitchen for breakfast.

“Hey Scar, while I make breakfast would you mind making my bed and picking up the room. I forgot before I left. Thanks Hon!” Denise asked from the kitchen.

She can be so annoying; like a little sister you can’t get away from because she is a friend. Well maybe that doesn’t make sense to you but to me it is a Philosophical statement. I wanted to move to Bridgeport to get away from my childhood and start a new life but after the death of Denise’s mother I couldn’t just leave her behind.

“Already done, I’ll be out in just a few minutes.” I tried not to sound irritated with her. Not everyone can live in cleanliness all the time.

As we sat eating the delicious waffles Denise made, we talked about the upcoming weekend. I love parting just not when I have an article due for work. I needed to dine at the local restaurant and see the newest movie, which I have to do alone. My boss has been breathing down my neck for over two weeks because the editor is putting together a spread on the local entertainment seen. I know it sounds like a long time to put a piece together but it is a big piece.

"So should we hit The Grind or go over to Waylon's Haunt this weekend?" Denise asked "I am dieing for a night out flirting with the somewhat rich and famous," I could see the stars and Simoleon signs in her eyes.

“Yeah that is what we should do find crappy dates and go out for crappy drinks.” I suggested with stale enthusiasm.  I hated finding someone to go out with. Denise always had the good fortune to just turn around and she would have a date. She never had to ask. I on the other hand had looks but am notorious for being picky. I will kiss anyone but as for having drinks or more than a kiss, well let’s just say it takes more than a kiss to get this girl excited.
“No that is a great idea. We could just mention at work that we are looking for dates for Valentine’s Day and just test out the guys that hit on us.” She was getting excited and that wasn’t a good thing. When she gets excited she doesn’t think about consequences, she just does.

“Now don’t get too excited. We have to find dates or we just go out with each other.” I tried to bring her back down a notch, and make her think straight.

“Yeah, I won’t have a problem finding a date and you will not be the third wheel. You well have a date and we are going to have fun. We will party all night and maybe find love. I can see the future my dear. You will fall in love.” She started on a tangent while she headed to the bedroom to dress for work.

“I’ll see you at Eugi’s at 4pm tonight right?” Denise confirmed as she headed for the door.

“Yeah after work, if you want we can get a cab and ride over there together?” I asked but she was already gone.

I spent the entire day calling to make reservations for dinner at The Bistro, but when they found out that I was from the Bridgeport Blah the hostess would just hang up. Finally my boss Caroline Custard called and demanded that they make room for me any time I wished. I got the reservations but at what cost?

After the entire ordeal and writing up the intro to my article about how hard it is to make a reservation, I decided I needed a drink and a game of darts with my best friend. We have been at our jobs for a short time but it just seems like Denise has the better job.

“Hey D, when did you get here?” I asked when I got out of the cab and saw Denise standing on the curb waiting for me to get here.

“Oh I had drinks with the boss today. Lala wanted to find out if drinking was as much fun as it looks on TV,” Denise smiled and added, “I really couldn’t say no and I surely couldn’t let her drink alone.”

I shook my head and headed for the glass double doors. “Okay D, that answers a lot and nothing at all! I am glad you had a good day at work. Let’s go downstairs. I will buy the first round tonight.”

We boarded the elevator and I pushed the B1 button and the doors closed. The elevator music was playing unfathomly loud. The tune was familar but I just couldn't place my finger on the title.

“So any leads on a date yet Scarlet? I have two dates lined up for this week alone.” Denise always knew how to rub in the fact that she got dates left and right and I am too picky for my own good. “I am just going to check them out and see if they can afford to take me out for Valentine’s Day.”

The ride down was quick but with Denise talking the whole way it felt like we were going all the way to the center of the earth. When the doors opened we noticed the place was empty Denise asked, “Should we go somewhere else or would you like to stay in this ice cold place?”

I looked at Denise with what must have been stress because she just simply smiled and headed for the bar.

“Two Shillelaghs please,” when the bartender didn’t answer she looked back at me as then back to the bartender and said, “Oh and she will pay.”

The drinks came to 12 simpletons, “Thank you and I am sorry for my friend. She gets cranky when people don’t do their jobs.”

Rude! I know but I was upset even though I didn’t need to talk to the bartender that way I felt justified because the drinks were expensive and right after paying for them she called happy hour and didn’t give the discount.

Denise and I stood at the bar and drank our drinks before heading to the Dart board for a quick game and heading home.

“I am so glad I have someone to drink with. I would feel like a drunk if I were back home drinking by myself.” Denise stated as the magic mixture began to affect her mood.

“Let’s play some darts, little one.” I said while setting my empty glass down on the bar with a loud thud. I wanted to get the tenders attention so she could do something other than stair out the window and look at the clock.

“How are you going to get a date Miss Picky?” Denise asked as she took the darts from my hand.

“Look D! Dates and boys/men, whatever you want to call them are not everything in the world! I don’t need a man! I need to depend on myself.” I stated a little too firmly because Denise’s bottom lip jetted out so fast. Men were her life and all she ever wanted was to marry rich.

“Okay so you would agree to a little bet then right?” Denise said with her evil smile.

I looked at her with a questioning glance as she shot her first dart, “What do you have in mind?”

She through the next dart and a bull’s-eye then she said, “If the next shot is another bull’s-eye you have to sign up for online dating! That way you will have a date for the party on Valentine’s Day."

“Okay, yeah, why not? I will agree to that.” I have known Denise my whole life and she has never shot two bull’s-eyes in a row. Then again there is a first time for everything.

“BULL’S-EYE!” Denise screamed!
